Northern Virginia Foreclosure Network

In the Summer of 2008, nonprofits and government representatives from across Northern Virginia met to discuss the foreclosure crisis. Despite significant variations in the severity of the foreclosure problem in Northern Virginia, these representatives felt that working together would raise the level of foreclosure prevention efforts.   Out of the meeting grew the Foreclosure Mitigation Network, an effort to focus on the people involved in this crisis and not just the bricks and mortar. Nonprofit NoVA (an affiliate of the Nonprofit Roundtable of Greater Washington) members were central players in this effort. Nonprofits understand that this housing crisis increases demand across many sectors and that we must pull together to ensure that our communities help each other survive.  The Northern Virginia Foreclosure Network, led by Nonprofit NoVA, held quarterly meetings to discuss cross-sectoral solutions to the foreclosure crisis.

In mid-April, the Northern Virginia Foreclosure Network became part of the Capital Area Foreclosure Network (CAFN).  CAFN is working through the Washington metropolitan region to build the capacity of housing counseling, legal service and direct service organizations by raising awareness of the role of direct services through marketing and outreach, coordinating trainings around the region and developing sustainable fundraising strategies. CAFN, like the Northern Virginia Foreclosure Network, leverages the knowledge, talents and resources of grassroots organizations, local government officials, funders, national intermediaries, government sponsored enterprises, lenders, regulatory agencies, and other key stakeholders.

While CAFN will work metro regionally, we want to support the Northern Virginia region and the important foreclosure prevention work that is already underway.  For instance, CAFN is hosting a free May 6th training on protections for people working with renters when their landlords go into foreclosure.  CAFN, in partnership with Northern Virginia Legal Services, is publishing a brochure with information specific to Virginia laws in conjunction with this training.  CAFN's leadership team includes key Virginia organizations such as Hispanic Committee of Virginia and Virginia Housing Development Authority.

Visit the CAFN home page if you are interested in learning more about these events or getting more involved in the Capital Area Foreclosure Network.
